ODAC Football Report: Week 1

Conference teams open the 2023 season with a 4-4 mark against non-league foes.

ODAC teams started the season with a bit of a mixed bag of results as squads went 4-4 against non-conference competition. Nationally 15th-ranked Randolph-Macon kicked off first and promptly thumped N.C. Wesleyan, 51-9, on the road. Averett opened with a convincing 34-14 away victory at Apprentice School. Shenandoah joined those at 1-0 to start the year with a solid triumph, 44-29, at home over Methodist. Guilford hosted the annual Gate City Soup Bowl with crosstown rival Greensboro in a night game at Armfield and defeated The Pride, 36-21.

Hampden-Sydney took part in the fourth The Gentlemen's Classic against fellow all-men's school Wabash College and fell to the Little Giants, 29-28, on a late two-point conversion. Ferrum led by three twice early on at Muskingum, but the Panthers were defeated by the Muskies, 31-20. Bridgewater squared off with #22 Susquehanna and found the going tough in a 51-19 loss to the Crusaders. Washington and Lee also met a nationally-ranked foe in #25 Salisbury. The Sea Gulls posted a 28-7 win in Lexington.

Win/loss records for the ODAC's head coaches are updated for each ODAC Football Report. They are accurate as of the date of the report.

Conroy made 11 solo stops along with 11 assisted tackles to match former standout Ben Burgan with a SU-record 22 stops against the Monarchs. That total would have matched the fourth-best output in Division III in 2022.* Conroy, a 2022 All-ODAC Third Team pick by the league's head coaches, made one stop behind the line of scrimmage. He also helped put points on the board and give Shenandoah the lead for good as he blocked a punt that went back into Methodist's end zone for a safety to give the Hornets a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
