ODAC Football Report: Week 7

Same Trio Remains Unbeaten in ODAC Play

The same three teams that were 2-0 after last weekend are now 3-0 following ODAC action in Week Seven of the Division III campaign. That won't be the case in a week's time with two of those squads – Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon – squaring off in Ashland.

Bridgewater is now 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall, but Eagles needed not only a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jaicere Bateman to Jamel Johnson with 0:23 to play and the subsequent 2-point conversion by Johnson, but also a blocked 55-yard would-be game-winning field goal attempt by Eli Rucker to secure a 22-21 win over Shenandoah.

Randolph-Macon also boasts records of 3-0 and 5-1 following its 49-10 win at Averett. The Yellow Jackets posted the first 28 points of the game and racked up 431 yards of total offense while allowing just 166 yards from scrimmage to the Cougars.

Washington and Lee trailed at Guilford early twice and saw the Quakers pull to within four points before three straight touchdowns paved the way for the Generals 40-23 win. WLU is now 3-0 in the ODAC and 4-2 in all games.

Ferrum and Hampden-Sydney fans experienced plenty of heartburn in the Panthers' 41-36 home win. The Tigers took an early 14-0 lead and led by 10 at 23-13, but 28 unanswered points not only gave FC the lead, but it provided the cushion the Panthers needed to hold on despite two fourth-quarter H-SC touchdowns.

    Todd, a senior from Louisville, Ky., earns his second straight ODAC weekly award after spearheading the Generals defense in Washington and Lee's 40-23 road win at Guilford. Todd registered 22 total tackles, which stands as the most in the ODAC this season and tied with Colton Gerken from Austin College for the most in a game in Division III. Todd made nine solo stops and came away with his second and third quarterback sacks of the year, costing the Quakers 13 yards of offense. Todd currently leads the ODAC tackles (72), tackles per game (12.0), and assisted stops (50). He is third in the country in tackles per game and fifth in total tackles. He had posted three games of 13 or more tackles.

  • JAICERE BATEMAN | BRIDGEWATER | SO | QB | LYNCHBURG, VA.
    Bateman, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Va., picks up his second ODAC weekly honor after leading Bridgewater to a 22-21 triumph over Shenandoah. Bateman accounted for all three of the Eagles' touchdowns, including the game-deciding four-yard touchdown pass and subsequent two-point conversion, both to receiver Jamel Johnson. Bateman set a career-record for completions in going 29-of-38 (76.3%) for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball eight times for 25 yards and a score. Bateman hit Jacob Perdue in the back of the end zone with a rollout pass from two yards out with the two-point conversion putting BC up, 8-7, with 6:49 left in the first half. After SU went ahead, 21-8, with a touchdown each in the third and fourth quarters, Bateman went to work on recovering the lead. He ran in from five yards out with 10:12 on the clock. Down 21-14, Bateman hit Johnson with a four-yard post-slant with 0:23 to go, pulling BC to within one point. Bateman then flipped a sidearm pass in traffic to Johnson for the deciding two-point conversion. For the season, Bateman leads the ODAC in passing completions (120), attempts (170), completion percentage (70.6), and quarterback efficiency (156.9). He has thrown for 1,363 yards and 11 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Bateman has carried the ball 31 times for 150 yards and seven scores.

  • ANDREW BROWN | BRIDGEWATER | JR | DL | ROCKVILLE, MD.
    Brown, a junior from Rockville, Md., came up big with the lights brightest in helping preserve Bridgewater's 22-21 victory over Shenandoah on Saturday night. As time expired, Brown got his hands up and blocked a would-be game-winning 55-yard field goal try, securing the one-point triumph for the Eagles to keep them unbeaten in ODAC play. It marks the first blocked kick of Brown's career. Against SU, Brown also registered a tackle for loss and broke up a pass from his defensive line post. For the season, Brown has made 14 total tackles.

    • OFFENSE
      • Ferrum running back Jahylen Lee ran for a career-high 174 yards and 3 touchdowns on 30 carries; his TD runs of 3, 32, and 4 powered the Panthers' game-changing run of 28 unanswered points spanning the third and fourth quarters
      • Guilford quarterback Caleb Robles accounted for 311 yards of total offense (GC had 393 total) by completing 24-of-35 passes for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns and running for 67 yards on 20 carries; he set career bests in passing completions, attempts, yards, and completion percentage (71.4%) as well as rushes and rushing yards
      • Hampden-Sydney quarterback Carter Sido was 12-of-25 passing for 282 yards and 5 touchdowns to go along with 10 carries for 69 yards; he tossed two 40-yard TD passes to Manning Lasso in the fourth quarter as H-SC mounted a comeback bid
      • Washington and Lee running back Jacob Romero posted 167 all-purpose yards with 120 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries along with 2 receptions for 47 yards
    • DEFENSE
      • Bridgewater defensive lineman Demarco Fleming made three tackles with 2.0 coming for a loss including a stop that put Shenandoah behind the chains on the drive prior to the Eagles' game-deciding possession
      • Hampden-Sydney linebacker Robert Clarke posted a game- and career-best 14 tackles including 1.0 for a loss against Ferrum
      • Washington and Lee linebacker Jalen Todd posted a career-best and ODAC season-high 22 tackles (9 solo) with 2.0 quarterback sacks that cost Guilford 13 yards of offense
    • SPECIAL TEAMS
      • Ferrum kicker Seth Deaton buried a pair of field goals – 28 and 22 yards – and made each of his 5 PATs for 11 points, his second-highest total of the season
      • Hampden-Sydney return man Joseph Gonzalez returned 5 kickoffs for 116 yards (23.2 avg.) with a long of 32 yards
      • Washington and Lee kick returner Axley Wilson returned 4 kicks (3 punts, 1 KO) for 94 yards including a 34-yard punt return for a touchdown to become the first General to registered a punt return TD since 2005
