ODAC Field Hockey Report: Week 7

Eight of the nine games in ODAC field hockey were conference contests with all teams firmly entrenched in their league slates. Nationally 18th-ranked Lynchburg won the most high-profile contest of the conference season with a 2-1 triumph at No. 15 Shenandoah on the weekend. Both Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee ran their winning streaks out to four straight games to join Lynchburg at 2-0 in ODAC games.

  • SHAY SCHOONES | LYNCHBURG | GOALKEEPER
Schoones, a junior from Hoogeveen, Netherlands, put in a pair of 60-minute shifts and allowed just one goal in helping nationally 18th-ranked Lynchburg to a pair of conference wins in the Hornets' ODAC openers last week. During the midweek, Schoones was needed just once in Lynchburg's 13-0 triumph at Sweet Briar. Then on Saturday, Lynchburg traveled to Winchester for a showdown with No. 15 Shenandoah. The southern Hornets returned to the Hill City with a 2-1 triumph over their northern namesake with Schoones stopping eight shots. That included a busy second quarter with five saves and two over the final 15 minutes of the contest. For the season, Schoones is third in the ODAC in goals against average (1.323) and fourth in save percentage (.773) with 51 stops.

  • DANIELLE COON | LYNCHBURG | MIDFIELDER
Coon, a senior from Newport News, Va., was on the mark four times to help nationally 18th-ranked Lynchburg open up its conference season with a pair of victories on the road. On Wednesday, Coon tallied twice in the Hornets 13-0 triumph at Sweet Briar. She scored Lynchburg's seventh at 11th goals off assists from Allie Freeman and Anna Dorrestijn, respectively. Then on Saturday, Schoones provided both of Lynchburg's goals in a 2-1 victory at No. 15 Shenandoah. Both of Coon's goals were unassisted efforts and came in the second half with Lynchburg trailing, 1-0, prior to her first tally at the 42:58 mark. She then broke the 1-1 stalemate with her second goal with just 1:47 to play to secure Lynchburg's ninth win of the campaign. For the season, Coon is tied for first in the ODAC in goals scored (9), second in points (23), and tied for third in assists (5).
