ODAC Field Hockey Report: Week 9

ODAC field hockey teams have just one or two league contests remaining following eight conference outings – and one non-league event – on the schedule. Tiebreakers will certainly play a major role when the final ODAC tournament bracket is released on Saturday, especially after nationally 24th-ranked Washington and Lee earned a 2-1 win at No. 15 Lynchburg on Saturday. That puts the Generals and Hornets on a collision course for a three-way tie with No. 20 Shenandoah at top the table. SU is 6-1, while LYN and WLU are now 5-1 heading into the final week. Another three-way stalemate could be in the making with Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon, and Roanoke all 3-3 in the standings.

  • VALENTINA AMBROGI-TORRES | RANDOLPH-MACON | GOALKEEPER
Ambrogi-Torres, a junior from Richmond, Va., picks up her fourth ODAC defensive award of the season after making 21 saves in extended time over two ODAC contests last week. In a marathon of a contest against Bridgewater on Wednesday, Ambrogi-Torres made nine stops over 80 minutes of action through regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods. In the resulting shootout to determine a winner, she did not allow any of the Eagles' four shootout takers to score, helping the Yellow Jackets post an important 3-2 victory. Then on Saturday, Ambrogi-Torres registered 12 saves in a 2-0 loss at No. 20 Shenandoah. She allowed one goal over the first 59:56 of the game before the Hornets registered their second tally with just 0:04 on the clock. For the season, Ambrogi-Torres leads the ODAC in saves percentage (.865) and is second in saves (128). She is tied with Roanoke's Chloe Miller and Washington and Lee's Julia McDonald with four shutouts atop the league chart, and ranks third in goals against average (1.310).

  • MADELINE LANCIONE | WASHINGTON AND LEE | FORWARD
Lancione, a first-year from Severna Park, Md., twice found the back of the cage and assisted on a third goal to help nationally 24th-ranked Washington and Lee to a pair of wins in ODAC play. The Generals earned an 8-0 win at Sweet Briar on Tuesday with Lancione assisting Sydney Baggett on the first goal of the game just 2:13 from the first whistle. Lancione made it 5-0 WLU at the 31:05 mark with an unassisted goal. On Saturday, Lancione turned a Zoe Dolfis pass into an assist with the game's first goal at 2:48 of the opening quarter in an eventual 2-1 victory at No. 15 Lynchburg. The win put the Generals on Hornets on a path for a possible three-way tie atop the ODAC table come the end of the regular season. For the year, Lancione is tied for sixth in the ODAC in points (21) and tied for fifth in goals scored (9).

    • Lynchburg midfielder Maddie Schuchter scored three times with an assist in a 7-0 win at Virginia Wesleyan and added an assist on LYN's goal in a 2-1 loss to No. 24 Washington and Lee
    • Roanoke keeper Chloe Miller registered her fourth shutout with three saves in a 2-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan. Midfielder Kaitlyn Robertson scored both of the Maroons' goals.
    • Shenandoah defender Camryn DeLeva scored once and assisted on another goal in an 8-0 win at EMU and notched the first goal in a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon.
    • Washington and Lee keeper Julia McDonald registered her fourth shutout in an 8-0 win at Sweet Briar and then made five saves in a 2-1 win at No. 15 Lynchburg.
