ODAC Women's Basketball Report: Week 1

The season is officially underway with nine of the league's 12 programs in action over the weekend. Hollins and nationally sixth-ranked Washington and Lee opened with a pair of victories. Lynchburg, No. 21 Randolph-Macon, and Virginia Wesleyan are all 1-0 while EMU went 1-1 over its first two outings. Overall, the ODAC went 8-2 in its first 10 games.

  • MARY SCHLEUSNER | WASHINGTON AND LEE | FORWARD
    Scheusner, a senior from Charlotte, Va., kicked off her final campaign in Lexington as ODAC fans have come to expect with dominating efforts on both ends of the floor to help nationally sixth-ranked Washington and Lee to a pair of victories at the Women Leaders Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Allegheny College. In a 78-77 win over the host Gators, Schleusner poured in 35 points to go with 26 rebounds (19 defensive), six assists, five steals, and a pair of blocked shots. She was 14-of-33 from the field and 6-of-10 from the line including the game-deciding free throw with 3-seconds to play. The ODAC's all-time leader in rebounds posted 24 points and 17 boards (12 defensive) in a 77-65 win over Chatham on Sunday. She was 10-of-14 from the field and added seven assists, a steal, and six blocked shots to her line.

  • BRIANNA LONG | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN | FORWARD
    Long, a sophomore from Woodbridge, Va., powered the Marlins opening-day offensive explosion as Virginia Wesleyan started the new campaign with a 108-86 triumph over Greensboro College. Long posted a career-high 36 points to go with 17 rebounds (7 offensive), an assist, and two steals. She was 13-for-16 (.813) from the field and 10-of-11 (.909) from the foul line. Long's scoring outburst is tied for the fifth-most points in a single-game in school history, while the squad's 108 markers are the sixth-most in the Marlins' record book.

    • EMU guard Grace Burke averaged 6.0 points and 7.0 rebounds to go with 8 assists and guard Jeriyah Osborne averaged 15.5 points with 5 assists in the Royals' 1-1 start.
    • Hollins guard Zaria Holden averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds – including a 28 points in a win over Brenau (66-65) – to go with 6 assists, while post Gracie Huffard averaged 4.5 points and 8.5 boards with 5 blocked shots and 8 steals in HU's 2-0 start.
    • Randolph-Macon guard Erin Porter registered a career-best 21 points with 4 boards and 4 steals in a 68-59 win at Dickinson.
