ODAC Wrestling Report: Week 4

ODAC teams and wrestlers had a very successful weekend with a series of regionally and nationally-ranked individual victories and some nationally-ranked team triumphs in dual match situations. Nationally fourth-ranked Roanoke won twice at the Castleton Duals including a triumph over No. 24 Stevens Tech. No. 22 Washington and Lee traveled to No. 20 Baldwin Wallace and earned an upset victory over the Yellow Jackets.

  • XAVIER SWANSON | AVERETT | 165 LBS
    Swanson, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., went 3-0 last week in a trio of duals for Averett including two at the Penn Duals hosted by Penn Tech in Williamsport, Pa. Swanson, the third-ranked wrestler at 165-pounds in Region 4, helped the Cougars to a 41-6 victory at Southern Virginia on Thursday. He won by fall (1:56) over Wyatt Kinne. Then in Williamsport, Swanson added two more bonus-point victories in AU's team losses to Alvernia University (19-22) and Penn Tech (14-30). Against Alvernia, Swanson again pinned his opponent, stopping Jacob Ebaugh after 1:44 on the mats. Against the host Wildcats, Swanson squared off with Carter Davis, the second-ranked wrestler in Region 2 and 13th-ranked in Division III by the NWCA. Swanson won by major decision (10-2) to cap his strong week.

  • MARK SAMUEL | ROANOKE | 141 LBS
    Samuel, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., helped nationally fourth-ranked Roanoke to a pair of team wins at the Castleton Duals hosted by Vermont State Castleton. Samuel, the reigning Division III champion at 141 pounds and current No. 1 ranked wrestler at that weight class by the NWCA, helped the Maroons to a 28-10 victory over No. 24 Stevens Tech. He earned a victory by major decision (13-1) over Nico Diaz, the third-ranked wrestler in Region 2 and 14th-rated competitor nationally. In a 26-16 win over the host Spartans, Samuel dominated Stone Farnsworth in a win by technical fall (20-5) at the 4:50 mark.

    • Adrian Samano, AU (125#): went 3-0 over the week with a tech fall win (18-2, 6:57) against Southern Virginia (W, 41-6), a major decision (18-5) against Alvernia (L, 22-19), and a win by fall (2:10) against Penn Tech (L, 30-14)
    • Xavier Preston, RC (174#): helped No. 4 Roanoke to 28-10 and 26-16 wins over No. 24 Stevens Tech and Castleton, respectively, with a major decision (11-3) and a technical fall (15-0, 4:50) over two regionally-ranked opponents; Preston is currently ranked #1 in Region 4 and #5 in Division III
    • Skyler Hickman, WLU (141#): won by technical fall (18-2, 5:00) to help No. 22 WLU to a 20-18 win at No. 20 Baldwin Wallace
    • Carter Stack, WLU (285#): provided deciding points with a 4-2 decision over nationally 12th-ranked Christian McChesney in No. 22's WLU's 20-18 team win at No. 20 Baldwin Wallace
