ODAC Wrestling Report: Week 1

The Division III wrestling season is officially underway with ODAC programs competing in five different tournaments over the weekend. On Saturday, Randolph and Southern Virginia traveled to Alliance, Ohio to compete in the Mount Union Invitational. Nationally 24th-ranked Washington and Lee headed north to take part in the Messiah Invitational hosted by Messiah University. Shenandoah also bussed to Pennsylvania for the Tonee Ellis Memorial hosted by Alvernia University. On Sunday, Averett continued the ODAC's move into the Keystone State by competing in the Lycoming Invitational hosted by Lycoming College. Third-ranked Roanoke stayed home and hosted the Southeast Open in the Cregger Center.

  • JOHN SANTOWSKI | WASHINGTON AND LEE | 197 LBS
    Santowski, a senior from Pittsford, N.Y., won the 197-pound weight class to help nationally 24th-ranked Washington and Lee to a runner-up team finish at the Messiah Invitational hosted by Messiah University in Grantham, Pa. Santowski went 4-0 on Saturday, which he began by pinning Charles Dunn from Johns Hopkins University at 2:40. In the quarterfinals, Santowski earned an 11-4 decision over Jacob Kraker from Wheaton College (Ill.) and followed that with a tough 1-0 decision over Tucker Seidel from Messiah. Santowski put himself atop the podium with a 7-2 decision over Will Davis from Elizabethtown College, the third-ranked competitor in Division III and second-ranked wrestler in Region 2 at 197 pounds.

  • LIAM FLANAGAN | WASHINGTON AND LEE | 157 LBS
    Flanagan, a sophomore from Harrisburg, Pa., made his case to become a permanent member of nationally 24th-ranked Washington and Lee's starting lineup by winning the 157-pound weight class to help the Generals to a runner-up showing at the Messiah Invitational hosted by Messiah University in Grantham, Pa. Flanagan began his day in round two with a technical fall (16-1) over Nicolas Rehfuss from Ursinus College. He then earned a 4-2 decision over Noah Rice from Messiah. Flanagan perched himself atop the podium with two ranked wins in the semifinal and title bouts. In the semifinals, he won by sudden victory-1 (4-1) over Tyler Rossini from Brockport State, who is ranked sixth in Division III and second in Region 2. In the championship match, Flanagan posted a 5-2 decision over Clay Gainer from Messiah, who is ranked third in Region 3.

    • Xavier Swanson, AU (164#): went 4-0 to finish 1st in the juniors/seniors bracket at the Lycoming Invitational
    • Jude Robson, RC (133#): went 3-1 to place second at the Southeast Open
    • Brock Sullivan, RC (184#): went 3-1 to finish second at the Southeast Open
    • Jack Birth, SU (184#): went 3-2 to place fourth at the Tonee Ellis Memorial
    • Hunter Ballantine, SU (157#): went 4-1 to finish third at the Tonee Ellis Memorial
