PROVIDENCE, R.I. — For the second straight season, the ODAC is home to the 141-pound national champion. Roanoke College star Mark Samuel put an exclamation point on a stellar day of competition at the Division III Wrestling Championships by claiming the program's first national title on Saturday in the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.
Samuel joins Greensboro College five-time All-American Josh Wilson as the ODAC's two champions. The pair squared off in the semifinals on Saturday with Samuel earning a win by tiebreaker-1 (2-1) to deny the 2024 weight class champion a shot at back-to-back titles. Samuel took advantage of the opportunity and posted a 9-3 decision over Shawn Conway from the University of Chicago to claim his crown.
Samuel and Wilson were two of five ODAC All-Americans over the course of two days. They were joined by Averett University's Mason Barrett and the Ferrum College duo of Zach Beckner and Rayshawn Dixon.
Wilson closed the competition as the fifth place finisher at 141. After falling to Samuel, he dropped a 9-3 decision to North Central College's Bradley Rosen. Wilson rebounded with a 4-2 decision over Pierre Baldwin from Central (Iowa) College to claim fifth place.
Barrett and Beckner started the day in opposite semifinals at 125 pounds. Barrett lost to eventual champion Joziah Fry from Johnson and Wales by major decision (11-3). He then posted a major decision (14-2) win over his own over Jack Craig from Southern Maine to earn a spot in the third-place bout. Beckner lost his semifinal to North Central's Christian Guzman by major decision (13-4), but recovered in the consolation semifinals with a sudden-victory-1 (8-5) decision over Brayden Parke from Coe College to join Barrett in the third place match. That bout was as tight as one would expect with Barrett prevailing by tiebreaker-1 (2-2) over Beckner to lead both competitors to the podium as the third and fourth place finishers.
Beckner's Panthers' teammate Dixon also finished fourth at 285 pounds. He lost in the semifinals to Mitch Williamson from Wartburg College by decision (2-1). Dixon recovered with a 4-1 decision over Adolfo Betancur from Johnson & Wales. In the third place match, RIT's Josh Harkless won by decision (4-2).
