ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- The University of Lynchburg men's distance medley relay team felt heartache and then jubilation on Day 1 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, highlighting a strong open to competition at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York.
The Hornets, winners of the DMR national championship in 2024, thought a disqualification was going to cost them a second spot on the podium. That initial ruling was overturned, restoring Lynchburg's result as the national runner-up to Johns Hopkins University by just under a half-second. The squad of
Marko Kovacevic,
Jacob Hodnett,
Tor Hotung-Davidsen, and
Chasen Hunt posted a time of 9:52.92, second only to JHU's 9:52.43, earning themselves First Team All-American laurels.
Hotung-Davidsen and women's teammate
Allison Dell had big individual days as well. Hotung-Davidsen won the 800-meter run prelim at 1:51.40, putting him in pole position for Saturday's final slated for 4:50 p.m. ET. Dell placed ninth in the 5,000-meter (5K) run with a time of 17:07.71, earning her Second Team All-American recognition.
Success continued for Lynchburg with sprinter
Tristan Wright qualifying for the 60-meter dash finals. He tied the ODAC overall record of 0:06.76 for a second time with the previous occasion serving as the new ODAC championship record. The finals are set for 3:25 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Washington and Lee saw two runners take to the track.
Cassie Carr missed qualifying for the finals by 0.20 seconds in the women's mile run. She placed 11th at 4:56.58 to earn Second Team All-America distinction. Generals teammate
Jesma Evans, who set the ODAC championship record in the 400-meter dash two weeks ago, finished 19th at 0:57.69.
In addition to Hotung-Davidsen and Wright in their respective finals, five additional ODAC athletes are set to compete in individual finals events on Saturday. Lynchburg jumpers Jamarcus Brown and Kacey Kelly will take part in the men's high jump and women's triple jump, respectively. Teammate Hunt will take his ODAC record time (7:56.92) into the 3,000-meter (3K) run field. Washington and Lee jumper
Camille Gillum will try to go for gold in the women's high jump, while
Olivia Warr profiles much like Hunt in that she carries her ODAC record time (9:38.48) into the women's 3K race.
