FOREST, Va. --- Conference scheduling for women's tennis has been in place since the 2007 season when the league switched to a team-based tournament. In that time, Washington and Lee University has stood atop the ODAC table each time, posting unbeaten league marks in 19 straight seasons. That includes this year with the Generals claiming the regular season crown and topping the eight-team field for the upcoming ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
Resolving two ties was part of confirming this year's tournament participants with one requiring the final step of the process and the other employing the first method. The top-four seeds, however, were free from tied scenarios.
Joining Washington and Lee as quarterfinal hosts are second-seeded Averett University (9-1), third-seeded Sweet Briar College (8-2), and fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University (7-3). Each will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday. Winners from those contests will travel to Washington and Lee on the weekend for semifinal and championship competition.
Which team would occupy fifth position required the deepest of tiebreakers possible in ODAC women's tennis. Randolph College and Shenandoah University tied at 6-4 in the league table. They played each other during the regular season, but their outing was not part of the ODAC unbalanced scheduling, rendering that result not eligible for tiebreaker consideration. The next two steps in the conference's process -- the ODAC Five-Point Tiebreaker and top-down comparison, both employing a function of common opponents -- did not break the stalemate. That left drawn lots determined before the 2024-25 season began to break the tie. Shenandoah owns the top-lot in the sport, awarding the Hornets the fifth seeded in the tournament. Randolph, owners of the #11 lot, will play as the sixth seed. SU will travel to VWU on Tuesday, while the WildCats head to SBC in the quarterfinals.
Guilford College (5-5) enters the ODAC postseason for the first time since 2016 as the seventh seed. The Quakers will travel the short distance north to Averett on Tuesday.
The final seed came down to head-to-head tiebreakers between the University of Lynchburg and Randolph-Macon College. Both tied at 4-6 in the conference standings. The Yellow Jackets earned a 4-3 victory in their ODAC regular season matchup, awarding the field-capping eighth seed to RMC and a date at top-seeded WLU in the quarterfinals.
