NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Nationally 21st-ranked Randolph-Macon College went on the road and promptly used the minimum amount of games necessary to win the Newport News Regional of the Division III Softball Championship.
The Yellow Jackets (37-6) advance to the best-of-3 series Super Regional round against Moravian University. Location, dates, and times of the games against the 18th-ranked Greyhounds (39-7) next weekend will be confirmed on Sunday.
Randolph-Macon went 3-0 in the four-team double-elimination regional pod hosted by Christopher Newport University. That RMC effort included back-to-back wins over the third-ranked host Captains to lift the regional trophy.
Naomil Sadler gave RMC its first win on Thursday with her seventh-inning walk-off single plating Jacy Ramos for a 3-2 victory over Alfred University. The next day, more late scoring was needed with Reagan Hill providing the go-ahead and eventual game-winning sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Yellow Jackets to a 4-3 win over CNU.
CNU posted an 8-3 win over Alfred on Friday night to stay alive in the regional and set up two possible showdowns with Randolph-Macon for the regional title.
The unbeaten Yellow Jackets did not waste any time in the first of those two title contests, scoring six runs over the first three innings on the way to a 6-2 regional-clinching victory. Blayne Talley hit a solo shot, while Tori Powell provided the big blow with a three-run blast to blow the game open in the third inning.
Regional MOP Gracie Ellis won all three games for Randolph-Macon. The ODAC Pitcher of the Year worked all 21 innings in the circle, giving up seven runs (6 earned) on 16 hits with one walk and 21 strikeouts. That latter total includes a dozen punchouts against Alfred in the regional opener.
