ODAC Golf Report: Fall - Week 3

What a week for ODAC golf! Conference men's and women's programs and players competed in three total tournaments with one team victory, two individual medals, and seven top-10 showings overall.

MEN'S GOLF - One Tournament

  • Gate City Invitational (Results): Forest Oaks Country Club – home to two recent ODAC championships – welcomed an extremely deep field to Greensboro with with 17 of the 18 teams in the field at least receiving votes towards the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll including eight to the top-nine programs in the country. Second-ranked Washington and Lee finished sixth, while #15 Guilford, #19 Hampden-Sydney, Averett (received votes), and #8 Lynchburg placed 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th, respectively. WLU's Jonathan McEwen was one of four players to finish at 6-under over 54 holes to tie for first in a field of 96 players.
  • Kinder-Williams Invitational (Results): Lakeview Golf Club played host to 11 schools and 16 competing teams for Bridgewater's annual Kinder-Williams Invitational. The Eagles won the event with their “B” team placing fifth and “C” unit finishing 14th. Shenandoah's “B” squad slotted fourth with the Hornets “C” team chiming in 13th. Hampden-Sydney's “B” and “C” teams placed sixth and 11th, respectively, while Roanoke  tied for eighth and Virginia Wesleyan posted a 10th-place showing. BC's Walker Gillespie won the 36-hole event at 7-under par.


WOMEN'S GOLF - One Tournament

  • NCAA Preview (Results): The NCAA Preview featured an exceptional field of talent at the Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif. Fifteen teams competed with 14 at least receiving votes towards the Division III Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll including the top-six in the country. Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee carried the ODAC banner with the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets tying for fifth and the 13th-ranked Generals finishing eighth. RMC's Alexis Haller and Morgan Mussatt tied for eighth as the highest-placing ODAC players.
  • ALEXIS HALLER / MORGAN MUSSATT | RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE
    Haller, a junior from Louisville, Ky., and Mussatt, a junior from Henrico, Va., earn Co-Golfers of the Week after tying for eighth at the well-attending NCAA Preview hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif. Haller and Mussatt each carded 1-under par scores of 144 following 36 holes on the par-72 track set to 5,749 yards. Haller opened with a 3-under 69 that featured four birdies to help her reset the RMC single-round player low score. She notched a 74 in round two that included three more birdies. Mussatt, who is picking up her second ODAC weekly honor of the season, posted a 74 with three birdies in round one. She then matched Haller's first round 69 with one of her own, registering four birdies and one of just two eagles among the 96 players in the tournament. Haller and Mussatt's 143 scores were five shots back of individual champion Emma Wong from second-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

    Randolph-Macon, ranked 12th in the initial Division III Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll, tied for fifth with Washington University in St. Louis at 17-over 593 (293-300). The 15-team field included 14 squads that at least received votes towards the top-25 poll including the top-six in the nation. Carnegie Mellon won the event at 17-under 560.

  • JONATHAN McEWEN | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
    McEwen, a junior from Portsmouth, Va., kicked off the defense of his Division III Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year award by tying for first at the well-attended Gate City Invitational hosted by Greensboro College at Forest Oaks Country Club. McEwen, who is a two-time Ping First Team All-American as well as defending ODAC champion and two-time All-ODAC First Team selection, posted a 6-under 210 following 54-holes of competition on the par-72 track set to 7,020 yards. He was joined in a four-way tie for the individual medal by Jackson Hiller from nationally sixth-ranked Oglethorpe University, Joshua Wang from #9 Carnegie Mellon University, and Elias Becker from #5 Sewanee. McEwen burst out the gate with a program-record tying 8-under 64 in round one that featured five birdies and two of his tournament-high five eagles. He posted an even-par 72 over his next 18 holes that featured one birdie and his remaining eagle, which helped him lead the field in par-5 scoring (4.17 / 10-under). In round three, McEwen registered four birdies on the way to a 2-over 74.

    Washington and Lee, ranked second in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, finished sixth overall and 8-over 872 (285-288-299). The field featured 18 teams with 17 of them at least receiving votes towards the coaches poll including eight of the top-nine programs in the country.

    • WASHINGTON AND LEE: finished 8th at 20-over 596 (293-303) at the NCAA Preview; 293 tied for the 2nd-best round in program history, while the Generals 596 tied for the 3rd-best 36-hole score in WLU history
      • Ella Wong tied for 16th at 2-over 146 (69-77); her 1st round 69 tied the WLU records for lowest 18-hole round and lowest round to par

Only a designated “A” team cards an official score towards NCAA rankings and team averages. All individual players competing in a tournament, regardless of team designation, card official rounds towards their official individual scoring averages and NCAA rankings.

    • AVERETT: finished 15th at 37-over 901 (306-297-298) at the Gate City Invitational
      • Chase Myers tied for 37th at 6-over 222 (73-78-71)
    • BRIDGEWATER: finished 1st at 4-under 572 (288-284) at the Kinder-Williams Invitational; 1st win of their home tournament since 2012
      • Walker Gillespie finished 1st at 7-under 137 (68-69)
    • GUILFORD: finished 13 that 29-over 893 (294-296-303) at the Gate City Invitational
      • Andrew Perry tied for 43rd at 7-over 223 (70-74-79)
    • HAMPDEN-SYDNEY: finished 14th at 35-over 899 (302-304-293) at the Gate City Invitational
      • Jack Barnes (75-74-75) and Nick Bernard (78-75-71) tied for 46th at 8-over 224
    • LYNCHBURG: finished 16th at 40-over 904 (307-306-291) at the Gate City Invitational
      • Cooper Mizelle tied for 27th at 4-over 220 (75-72-73)
    • ROANOKE: tied for 8th at 26-over 602 (295-307) at the Kinder-Williams Invitational
      • Andrew Garcia tied for 19th at 3-over 147 (73-74)
    • SHENANDOAH: SU's “B” team finished 4th at 13-over 589 (300-289) at the Kinder-Williams Invitational
      • Dan Ailor tied for 12th at 1-over 145 (75-70)
    • VIRGINIA WESLEYAN: finished 10th at 28-over 604 (302-302) at the Kinder-Williams Invitational
      • Sebastien Haazer tied for 26th at 5-over 149 (77-72)
