ODAC Golf Report: Fall - Week 6

ODAC golfers had strong outings in each of the four events competed over the past week. That includes three men's tournaments where each featured at least one ODAC player in the top-five – including a playoff medal for Hampden-Sydney's Oliver Tobin – and the lone women's outing highlighted by two top-10 finishers.

This is the first week for Clippd publishing its Division III rankings that will eventually help fill out the fields for the Division III Men's and Women's Golf Championships in May. See below the ODAC's current standing. A quick note for ODAC fans – the women's Hollins Cup had some scoring technical difficulties, so that tournament is not included in this first set of rankings. It has been confirmed that it will be included in the next run.

MEN'S GOLF - One Tournament

  • JACK INGRAM INVITATIONAL (Results): The Tillery Tradition Country Club in Mt. Gilead, N.C. welcomed “B” and “C” teams from Hampden-Sydney to the Jack Ingram Invitational hosted by Pfeiffer University. The Tigers' “B” outfit finished second at 23-over 599 with H-SC's “C” unit finishing fourth at 39-over 615. Oliver Tobin won a 1-hole playoff with N.C. Wesleyan's Rylan Gay for the individual medal after finishing 36 holes at 2-over 146.
  • MASON DIXON COLLEGIATE (Results): Weather shortened the Mason Dixon Collegiate by 18 holes to just one round of competition at the Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro, Pa. Roanoke tied for second at 2-under 286 with Shenandoah (+6, 294) ninth and Batten (+18, 306) in 16th position. RC's Andrew Garcia tied for third at 3-under 69 as the top ODAC finisher.
  • THE TARTAN INVITATIONAL (Results): The men's version of The Tartan Invitational featured a very strong field, much like the women's edition from a few weeks prior. The Laurel Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa., welcomed the Carnegie Mellon University-hosted event. Lynchburg was the top ODAC team in seventh place at 36-over 900 with Washington and Lee three strokes back in a tie for eighth. Hampden-Sydney and Guilford also finished back-to-back with the Tigers 14th (+52, 916) and Quakers 15th (+58, 922). WLU's Hall Chapman posted carded two rounds under-par over 54 holes on the way to a runner-up showing at 1-under 215, two shots behind the medalist.

WOMEN'S GOLF - Two Events

  • HOLLINS CUP (Results): Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee trekked west to Santa Cruz, Calif., where they took part in the well-attended Hollins Cup hosted by UC Santa Cruz at Pasatiempo Golf Club. WLU placed fifth at 50-over 626, while RMC chimed in eighth at 60-over 636. The Generals' Toral Bhatt was the top ODAC finisher in sixth place at 7-over 151.
  • TORAL BHATT | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
Bhatt, a sophomore from Milwaukee, Wis., turned in a top-10 finish at the well-attended Hollins Cup hosted by the University of California, Santa Cruz at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. Bhatt posted a 7-over 151 to place sixth out of 65 players following 36 holes of competition on the par-72 track set to 5,832 yards. Last season's ODAC Rookie of the Year opened with a 1-over 73 that featured a trio of birdies. She notched four more birdies on day two on the way to a 6-over 78 to close the tournament 10 strokes behind medalist Katherine Keith from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Bhatt's seven birdies tied for third-most in the tournament, while she tied for fourth in par-3 scoring (+2, 3.20).

Washington and Lee finished fifth among a strong field of 13 competing teams at 50-over 626 (315-311).

  • HALL CHAPMAN | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
Chapman, a first-year from Chapel Hill, N.C., turned in his best collegiate outing at The Tartan Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon University at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa. Chapman finished as the runner-up as one of only two players in the 90-golfer field to card an under-par total following 54-holes of competition on the challenging par-72 track set to 7,258 yards. All participants played 36 holes on day one with Chapman beginning his event with a 3-over 75 highlighted by one birdie. Later that day, he sunk three birdies on the way to 1-under 71. Chapman nearly doubled his birdie total over his final 18 holes on day two, carding five birdies including three over a four-hole stretch (11 thru 14) to power a 3-under 69 as one of just six sub-70 rounds out of 268 recorded. Chapman two strokes back of medalist Joshua Wang from host CMU. Chapman's showing in this tournament helped him achieve the No. 8 ranking in the first published Division III player rankings by Clippd.

Washington and Lee tied for eighth overall at 39-over 903 (307-291-305) for the Generals' second top-10 of the fall season. WLU holds 19th position in the first published Division III team rankings by Clippd.
