ODAC Golf Report: Spring - Week 5

It was a bit of a lighter week for ODAC golfers with just two multi-team events and one head-to-head showdown on the docket

MEN'S GOLF - One Tournament

  • Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial (Results): The annual event hosted by Newport News Apprentice was the lone men's tournament on the league schedule over the past week. Hampden-Sydney entered “B” and “C” teams into the field, while Roanoke also added both “B” and “C” units. Virginia Wesleyan brought its “A” squad to the event, and Guilford entered a few individuals to help bring the total number of finishing competitors to 72. H-SC's “C” team and RC's “B” outfit tied atop the leaderboard at 37-over 618. The Tigers' Groves Williams was the top ODAC individual as the runner-up at 2-over 146 following 36 holes at Williamsburg Golf Club.

WOMEN'S GOLF - Two Events

  • Stith Invitational (Results): Randolph-Macon hosted its annual event, the Stith Invitational at The Dominion Club. The field included 16 total teams with 10 ranked 39th or better by Clippd with four of the top-11. No. 8 Washington and Lee finished as the runner-up, 12 strokes back of No. 3 NYU. The 11th-ranked Yellow Jackets finished fourth with No. 36 Lynchburg slotting eighth, Virginia Wesleyan 11th, and Shenandoah 16th. WLU's Toral Bhatt tied for medalist honors with NYU's Shih Ting Tan at 1-over 217 following 54 holes of play.
  • Daisy Challenge - Sweet Briar vs. Meredith (Results): Sweet Briar hosted a head-to-head stroke play event with Meredith at Winton Farm Golf Club. The Vixens won by 15 strokes, 349-364. SBC's Kalei Minter topped the leaderboard with a career-low  7-over 78.
  • TORAL BHATT | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
Bhatt, a first-year from Milwaukee, Wis., collects her second straight ODAC weekly honor after tying atop the leaderboard at the Stith Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College at The Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Va. Bhatt, ranked 62nd in Division III by Clippd entering the event, finished at 1-over 217 with 13th-ranked Shih Ting Tan from NYU following 54 holes of competition par-72 layout set to 5,651 yards for rounds one and two and 5,646 yards for round three. Bhatt's first 36 holes were fairly “colorful” on the scorecard. She opened with four bogeys offset by three birdies on the way to a 1-over 73. She was even in terms of red and blue in round two, posting four birdies and bogeys towards an even-par 72. Bhatt's final 18 holes were super consistent with 16 pars surrounding one birdie and one bogey for a second round of 72. Bhatt tied for second with 37 pars, tied for third in par-5 scoring (-3, 4.75), and ranked fourth in par-4 scoring (+1, 4.03). Her nine bogeys were the third fewest among the 84 competing players. Following the tournament, Bhatt's ranking has improved to No. 38 in Division III with a 73.8 adjusted scoring average over 16 rounds of play. Over the past two weeks, she has improved 48 positions in the rankings.

Eighth-ranked Washington and Lee finished as the runner-up among 16 competing schools that included 10 of the top-39 teams in Division III with four of the top-11 highlighting the list. The Generals put in a team card of 891 (297-296-298), 12 shots back of No. 3 NYU on the team leaderboard.

  • GROVES WILLIAMS | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE
Williams, a sophomore from Greenville, S.C., was the top-finishing ODAC player at the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial hosted by Newport News Apprentice at Williamsburg Golf Club. Williams took home silver medal honors, finishing at 2-over 146 and one shot back of champion Fischer Leggitt from Christopher Newport University following 36 holes of play on the par-72 layout set to 6,745 yards. Williams opened with an even-par 72 that featured three birdies and three bogeys. His second set of 18 holes had four fewer pars with four birdies and offsetting six bogeys towards a 2-over 74. Williams has now played in nine rounds towards Division III Clippd rankings this season. Once the tournament is entered by the host, his ranking information will update. He entered the tournament with a 75.7 adjusted scoring average.

Williams helped drive Hampden-Sydney's “C” team to the top of the 12-team leaderboard, tying with Roanoke's “B” squad at 37-over 613 (313-300). The results from H-SC's “B” and “C” units do not impact the nationally 47th-ranked Tigers' position on the Division III chart.
