CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The No. 9 Washington and Lee women's tennis team saw its 2025-26 season come to an end on Monday afternoon in a 4-0 loss against No. 4 Wesleyan (Conn.) in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Cardinals (21-2) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 3 then No. 2. The Wesleyan team of Kendall Smith and Mariia Kornilova posted a 6-2 win at No. 3, followed by a 6-4 win from Lara Afolayanka and Sarah Youngberg.
• Seniors Lauren Long and Grace Lorenz fought hard at No. 1 doubles, but went unfinished. They led Leila Epstein and Lucinda Gatsiounis, 5-4, at the time of clinching.
• Wesleyan then picked up straight-set wins in singles at Nos. 4, 1 and 6 to clinch the match. Youngberg won 6-1, 6-3 for the team's second point, Agnes Guggenheim was a 6-4, 6-3 victor at No. 1 and Smith dropped only six games to clinch the match for the Cardinals.

 
END-OF-SEASON NOTES:

• This concludes team play for the Generals for the 2025-26 season. They finish off one of the strongest seasons for the program in recent history, as they made it to the national quarterfinals for the first time in five years and had the most wins (22) in a season since 2014-15 (24).
• The senior class finishes its career with an 80-18 overall record and went 40-0 in ODAC play. It is the most wins in a four-year stretch since 2014-18 when the program went 83-25.

• The Generals will be represented by Long once again in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship later this week. Long will make her third appearance in the singles championship on Friday, with the bracket expected to be released on Thursday.
