Averett One Point Back as New Season Nears

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC wrestling experienced a highly successful return to the mats in its first season since 1980 last year, which has led to greater anticipation for 2023-24 campaign as the league establishes itself in the Division III ranks.

The top of the ODAC Wrestling Preseason Poll highlights the competition level that already exists with three teams separated by just one point. Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University garnered 31 tallies each with Averett University just one marker back with 30. Each received first place consideration with the Generals picking up three top nods and the Cougars and Maroons with two apiece.

In the sections below, we look back to the 2022-23 season to set the tone for this year and then dive into some features of ODAC wrestling for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign.

Stay tuned to social media and ODAC websites tomorrow (Wednesday, 11/1) for the release of the ODAC's preseason individual rankings for each weight class.

    • Competition was strong throughout the ODAC dual meet schedule with three teams separating at the top; tri-champions were declared as Averett, Roanoke, and Washington and Lee all finished with 5-1 records.
    • Shenandoah served as hosts for the ODAC Wrestling Championships, which featured six- or seven-wrestler brackets at each weight class with full back-draw for enhanced competition.
    • Five the ODAC's schools saw wrestlers claim individual championships, but it was Washington and Lee that collected the team trophy with 135.5 points to out-pace Averett (122.0) and Roanoke (117.0).
    • The Generals' Ryan Luth, who returns to Lexington on the coaching staff this season, was named the first MOP of the ODAC Championships.


    2023 ODAC Championship Results

    • A total of 10 ODAC wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships following competition at the Southeast Regionals; four earned All-American honors.
      • Mason Barrett (AU) placed 6th overall at 125 lbs. with three wins by decision and one by major
      • Josh Wilson (GB) finished 8th overall at 141 lbs. with all three of his victories coming by decision.
      • Ryan Luth (WLU) was the most successful of the ODAC's representation, placing 5th overall at 157 lbs; he won twice by major and twice by decision.
      • Mahlic Sallah (RC) finished 8th at 184 lbs. with one win by decision and another by sudden victory-1
  • The talent returning to ODAC rosters is eye-opening with two of last season's four All-Americans and four of the 10 national qualifiers back for another go in 2023-24. The quality is further bolstered by 21-of-30 All-ODAC competitors returning including three weight-class champions and two major award winners.

    Roanoke and Washington and Lee lead the charge with six returning All-ODAC standouts back, the latter led by reigning ODAC Coach of the Year, Nathan Shearer. Greensboro features 2022-23 ODAC Wrestler of the Year, Josh Wilson, while Roanoke welcomes back ODAC Rookie of the Year Mark Samuel (133/141 lbs.).

  • The NWCA has yet to release its Division III preseason rankings, but D3wrestle.com posted its annual set of rankings early on Tuesday (10/31). Find those HERE and see the ODAC's contingent of stars listed below. D3wrestle ranks 10 competitors with an additional eight noted as “contenders" followed by by eight recognized as “honorable mention.” The latter two categories are listed alphabetically.

      • Mason Barrett (AU) is slotted 5th in the country, while Mac Cafurello (RC) earned honor mention status.
    • 133 LBS
      • No ODAC wrestlers are ranked at this weight class.
    • 141 LBS
      • Josh Wilson (GB) is the #4 wrestler in the country with Mark Samuel (RC) earning an honorable mention designation.
    • 149 LBS
      • Hunter Campbell (AU) is the lone ODAC representative at 149 lbs., earning honorable mention distinction.
    • 157 LBS
      • Jesse Alvarado (AU) is listed as a contender, making him the only league wrestler to earn recognition at 157 lbs.
    • 165 LBS
      • Harrison Kelly (WLU) appears on the contenders list, while Jacob Cherry (RC) and Anthony Taylor (AU) received honorable mention recognition.
    • 174 LBS
      • No ODAC wrestlers are ranked at this weight class.
    • 184 LBS
      • No ODAC wrestlers are ranked at this weight class.
    • 197 LBS
      • No ODAC wrestlers are ranked at this weight class.
    • 285 LBS
      • Ray Dixon (FC) is ranked 5th in Division III and is the lone ODAC wrestler to earn heavyweight recognition.
    • ODAC schools will again compete in a robust schedule of dual and invitational events.
    • Each league school will face each other in an official ODAC dual match, which will determine the basis of the ODAC regular season champion.
    • The ODAC Wrestling Championships will be hosted by Averett University on Saturday, February 17 at the Cougars' E. Stuart James Grant Center in Danville, Va.
    • The NCAA Southeast Regional Championships are set for March 1-2 at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
    • The NCAA Division III Championships will by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on March 15-16in La Crosse, Wis.
