ODAC Men's Golf Report: Week 2

H-SC's Barnes Earns First Weekly Award of the Season

The 2023-24 men's golf season kicked off with a pair of events that featured seven ODAC schools. Randolph-Macon was the lone league member to compete in The Gauntlet hosted at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg, Pa. Bridgewater hosted its annual Kinder-Williams Invitational at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va. Six ODAC schools had at least one team of players competing in that event.

The first ODAC Men's Golfer of the Week award goes to Hampden-Sydney first-year Jack Barnes. Barnes, a native of Manakin Sabot, Va., finished tied for medalist honors with Sean Dowd from Stevenson University and Brogan Bennett from Southern Virginia University. They posted 36-hole scores of 3-under par 141 on the par-72 track set to 6,769 yards. Two playoff holes were necessary to determine a tournament champion, which saw Dowd come away with the tournament's top individual honor.

Barnes, competing in his first collegiate event as part of Hampden-Sydney's “B” team, opened with a 5-under 67 to own a two stroke lead over Dowd and Stevenson's Ryan Thomas after the first round. Barnes carded two eagles and three birdies against a pair of bogeys and 11 pars. In round two, he checked in with a 2-over 74. He again posted a trio of birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys and a double.

The Tigers' squad finished second overall at 9-over 585 (285-300). Roanoke's “A” team won the event at even-par 576 (289-287).

    • Bridgewater: had three teams in the field at its Kinder-Williams Invitational; BC's “A” squad finished 5th overall at 20-over 596 (299-297); Max Bondurant led the way for all 19 total Eagles in the competition; he tied for 8th overall at 1-over 145 (75-70).
    • Ferrum: placed 14th at the Kinder-Williams Invitational at 68-over 644 (320-324); Brandon Jones was the top-finishing Panther in a tie for 33rd at 9-over 153 (73-80).
    • Lynchburg: competing as a “B” team, the Hornets placed 7th overall at 29-over 605 (297-308); Ben Chamberlin tied for 8th overall at 1-over 145 (70-75).
    • Randolph-Macon: placed 2nd overall at 1-under 575 (281-294) at The Gauntlet, one stroke back of champion Franklin & Marshall College; Jay Carr was the top Yellow Jacket in the field in a tie for 5th at 3-under 141 (70-71).
    • Roanoke: the Maroons entered two teams at the Kinder-Williams Invitational; RC's “A” team won the team title at even-par 576 (289-287), nine strokes clear of second place Hampden-Sydney; TJ Whelan was the top Maroon in a tie for 4th at 2-under 142 (72-70).
    • Shenandoah: SU featured two teams in the Kinder-Williams Invitational field; the Hornets “A” team placed 8th at 33-over 609 (299-310); Dan Ailor, competing for SU's “B” team, was the school's top finisher in a tie for 4th at 2-under 142 (70-72).

    * In collegiate golf, schools have the option to enter multiple teams in a tournament field. Only a designated “A” team cards an official score towards NCAA rankings and team averages. All individual players competing in a tournament, regardless of team designation, card official rounds towards their official individual scoring averages and NCAA rankings.
