All-ODAC Men's Tennis Awards Announced

WLU's Erb Repeats as POY, AU's Bohnenkamp Earns Second Straight Scholar-Athlete Honor

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC champion Washington and Lee University placed seven different players on the first team and collected a pair of special individual honors to highlight the 2024 All-ODAC Men's Tennis Awards.

Generals junior Evan Erb repeats as the ODAC Player of the Year, while WLU mentor David Detwiler gardner ODAC Coach of the Year laurels from his peers. Averett University senior Philipp Bohnenkamp is now a two-time winner of the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, as selected by the conference's athletic communications personnel. Virginia Wesleyan University first-year Ole Behrmann was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year by the league's head coaches.

Much like in the ODAC's women's ranks, the all-conference awards for men's tennis features largely new players earning recognition. Just 10 players appear on an All-ODAC team for a second straight season.

The All-ODAC First Team features eight of those repeat honorees. Erb is the lone first team returner as he collects his third straight top-team award. University of Lynchburg's Levi Vigdorchik is among four singles players to move up from the All-ODAC Second Team as he join Erb at #1 singles. WLU's Will KistlerEli Hirshberg, and James Kurani also moved up from the 2023 second team at #2, #3, and #5 singles, respectively.

In doubles play, Shenandoah University duo Artem Babiev and Keith Orr form a first team partnership at the top flight after earning all-league plaudits as members of separate tandems last year. Babiev repeats on the first team, while Orr moves up from the second team. WLU's Connor Coleman repeats as a first teamer as one-half of #3 doubles pairing with Sanjheev Rao.

On the second team, Guilford College's Andres Mercedes, last year's ODAC Rookie of the Year, repeats at both #1 singles and #1 doubles, the latter with new partner Brandon Hermes. AU's Prabjeet Chandhok is a second team choice at #4 singles after being a first team selection in 2023.

Erb, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., is on his way to etching his name in the history books as one of the ODAC's all-time best players. Erb is currently ranked 31st in the country and fifth in the Atlantic South Region with a chance to continue his season as the first alternative among those players selected for the Division III Men's Tennis Championships singles draw. He is 20-10 on the season in all singles matches including 13-5 from the top flight and 5-0 in conference play. He was 17-11 in all doubles matches with three different partners -- Eli Hirshberg (5-5), Will Kistler (11-6), and James Kurani (1-0). Erb has already racked up more than 100 career victories over three seasons. He is 49-21 in all singles matches and 56-20 in all doubles outings.

Detwiler is in his 23rd season as head coach of the Generals men's program and 26th year at Washington and Lee overall. This marks his sixth ODAC top coaching award, grouping with the honors he earned in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2013, and 2022. WLU men's tennis has lifted the most ODAC trophies in conference history for any sport with the Generals hoisting their 42nd overall and 14th men's tennis prize. Washington and Lee is ranked 28th in Division III and eighth in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA.

Behrmann, a first-year from Freising, Germany, provided strong play in his first season at VWU, helping the Marlins to a final regular season ranking of 47th in Division III. Behrmann went a team-best 14-4 in all singles matches playing among the top-three flight positions. He was 7-2 from third position, earning him All-ODAC Second Team laurels. He was 5-1 overall against league foes. In doubles play, Behrmann was 13-6 in all matches with three different partners -- Felix Bevc (8-5), Tudor Vlad (4-1), and Rafael Rullan Zarraga (1-0). Behrmann and Bevc earned second team honors.

Bohnenkamp, a senior from Essen, Germany, is the first repeat ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete from Averett University since the Cougars became a full-time member of the conference prior to the 2022-23 academic year. In the classroom, Bohnenkamp maintains a 3.97 grade point average as a business administration double major in accounting and management science. The men's tennis representative on Averett's SAAC is a multiple academic all-conference honoree from the Cougars time in the USA South and last season with the ODAC. He is an Academic All-District from College Sports Communicators honoree and VaSIDA Academic All-State. He received the top male athlete GPA award for each academic class the last three years including the honor as a senior this season. He is President of the Averett Leadership group and is involved in several community service projects including the ODAC canned food drive through SAAC in the fall.

The two-time Cougars men's tennis team captain split his time on two different courts. Bohnenkamp was a member of the inaugural Averett men's volleyball team, which will join the ODAC as an officially sponsored sport next season. On the tennis court, he went 5-0 in all singles matches this season including 2-0 in league play. He was 5-1 in doubles action with four different partners throughout the season. Bohnenkamp will graduate with career records of 26-3 in all singles matches and 22-9 in doubles play.
