LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Lynchburg men's soccer put together a commanding performance Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field, rolling past Transylvania 4–0 behind an efficient attack and a strong defensive showing.
The No. 4 Hornets asserted command from the opening whistle, controlling nearly 60 percent of possession on the way to their eighth consecutive win. Tonight's triumph marks 18 wins on the year, which ties the second-most in program history.
Lynchburg struck early and never looked back. In the 7th minute,
Chris Wiley opened the scoring when he finished a sequence set up by
Evan Pask and
Saul Lopez Coreas. The Hornets continued to pressure the Transylvania back line, and the advantage doubled in the 20th minute when
William Casey followed up a saved shot and buried his fifth goal of the season after an initial effort from
Kohlby Wilson was stopped. Wilson was credited with the assist on the play that doubled Lynchburg's advantage.
The Hornets' depth made an impact late in the first half. After sustained pressure and multiple saves from Transylvania goalkeeper Jackson Holt, Lynchburg broke through again in the 44th minute.
Sean DeLorenzo fired a shot that forced another save, but
Chris Bovo was first to the rebound and converted to send Lynchburg into the break up 3-0.
Lynchburg's control carried through the second half, with the back line limiting Transylvania to only two shots while the Hornets continued to create chances. The final goal came in the 76th minute when Wilson capped off an active day in the attack, finishing a pass from
Carlos Andres Romero for his fourth goal of the season.
In goal,
Thomas Viscuso earned the win with two first-half saves before
Matthew Kopsidas entered for the final minutes to close out the shutout. Thirteen different Hornets registered shots in the balanced effort, and the team earned five corner kicks while posting its 13th clean sheet of the year. With 13 shutouts, Lynchburg is one short of tying the program record for shutouts in a season, which is 14 from the 2017 season.
The Hornets continue the NCAA postseason action in the second round and are set to take on Christopher Newport tomorrow, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
