LYNCHBURG, Va. --- In a rough and tumble outing that featured 11 cards and one team finishing a man down, the University of Lynchburg walked off the friendly confines of Shellenberger Field one goal better than Christopher Newport University with a 2-1 triumph on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
Lynchburg (19-1-2), ranked 13th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and fourth in the NPI at the time of selections, saw goals from
Keaton Napior and
Benjamin Velasquez propel the Hornets to victory. Christopher Newport (11-3-5), slotted 22nd and 19th in the previously mentioned tables, got its goal via chaos in front of the Lynchburg net off a corner.
The Hornets move on to face Dickinson College in the third round. The Red Devils (13-0-7), ranked 22nd in the NPI, defeated N.C. Wesleyan University (5-0) and Denison University (2-0) to win an opening pod they hosted in Carlisle, Pa. The other third-round matchup in the Lynchburg-Dickinson pod is Emory University and Rowan University. The Eagles (13-1-3), ranked sixth and fifth, respectively, emerged from
Hampden-Sydney College's first and second round grouping. Emory defeated Maryville College (Tenn.)(3-1) and the host Tigers (3-0). The Profs (15-3-4), rated 33rd in the NPI, dispatched Bridgewater State College (1-0) and pod-host Wesleyan University (Conn.)(2-0).
CNU was the first squad off the mark in Lynchburg on Sunday. In the 19th minute, midfielder Colin Skwirut sent a corner towards the six-yard box and created chaos in front of Lynchburg keeper
Thomas Viscuso with the ball ending up in the back of the net for a 1-0 Captains edge.
Lynchburg leveled the score about a quarter-hour later. Napior was the recipient of a double-assist with Velasquez - the three-time ODAC Defensive Player of the Year - keying the action with a long throw-in that found two heads. First,
Kohlby Wilson flicked-on the long toss which found Napior's forehead in front of the goal-mouth to knot the score at 1-all with 33:29 gone from the opening whistle.
The Hornets took the lead in the second half with Velasquez converting a penalty kick in the 60th minute after
Andres Romero was taken down from behind. Velasquez sent the CNU keeper the wrong direction, striking a crisp low-drive into the lower-right corner for a lead that would maintain through the final horn.
Location and game timing of the next round of action will be communicated early this week. The third round games will be played on Saturday, November 22.
