ODAC Tennis Report: Report 5

The only tennis world largely remains active on Spring Break trips with a handful of conference matches dotting the schedule.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: ODAC women's teams took part in 16 matches over the past week with four of those featuring as conference matchups. Averett earned a win at Bridgewater, while Randolph-Macon held serve against Hollins. Guilford earned a one-point win over Roanoke, and Virginia Wesleyan secured its first ODAC win over HU. Lynchburg went 2-1 in non-conference action, while 7th-ranked Washington and Lee split nationally-ranked matches against #13 Carnegie Mellon and #30 Mary Washington. WLU and AU are 2-0 in league play with the Generals 5-2 overall. Guilford (5-3) has also won five matches.

MEN'S TENNIS: Just two league matches featured amongst a schedule of 18 overall contests. Roanoke and Averett picked up 7-0 wins in those outings against Ferrum and Bridgewater, respectively. Hampden-Sydney went 3-2 as the most active team in the conference, but it was Lynchburg that went unbeaten at 3-0. Averett went 2-0 and Guilford earned a non-conference win over Roanoke in the Quakers lone match of the week. Washington and Lee remains atop the ODAC standings at 5-0 in league play and 8-3 overall. AU is 2-0 versus the conference, while Lynchburg is 6-1 overall. Hampden-Sydney (6-5) has also won six matches.

  • LENA KERSTEN | RANDOLPH | SO. | BONN, GERMANY
    Kersten, a sophomore from Bonn, Germany, picked up her first ODAC weekly award of the season after going 4-0 last week including 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with Lize van Veen and 2-0 at No. 1 singles including a regionally-ranked victory. In a 5-2 team setback to Lake Forest, Kersten and van Veen earned a 6-4 win over Sophia Strupovets and Lilli Dockal. Kersten added a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Strupovets in singles play. She is the 14th-ranked player in the Midwest Region. 4-3 team victory over Greenville, Kersten and van Veen posted a 6-2 triumph over Emily Kowalke and Irlanda Oliver in doubles action, while Kersten tacked on a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Oliver in their singles match. Kersten is now 8-2 in all singles matches and 6-3 with van Veen in doubles play.

    Foster, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., picks up his first ODAC weekly award of the season after going a combined 9-1 in top-flight singles and doubles play, helping Hampden-Sydney to a 3-2 team record over the past seven days. Foster and Thomas Davis were 5-0 at No. 1 doubles with Foster going 4-1 at No. 1 singles, his lone loss to an opponent from a nationally-ranked program. In a 7-0 team win over Maryville (Tenn.), Foster and Davis posted a 6-3 victory over James Smith and Luka Romano. Foster tacked on a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Smith in singles play. In a 7-0 team loss to nationally fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University, Foster and Davis earned a 6-4 victory over Trey Lambright and Rohan Bhat. Foster lost to Rowan Matorin, 6-4, 6-4, in singles action. The Tigers rebounded with back-to-back 6-1 team wins over Ohio Northern University and University of Saint Joseph (Conn.). Foster and Davis earned a 7-5 victory over Peyton Specht and Tyler Wood from ONU and a 6-3 win over USJ's Karol Romer and Manuel Hernandez. Foster posted 6-0, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2 singles victories over Specht and Romer, respectively. In a 5-2 team loss to Connecticut College, Foster and Davis posted a 6-4 win over Maximo Gulla and Jules Taylor-Kerman with Foster adding a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 victory over Arjun Premkumar in singles play.
