ODAC Women's Volleyball Report: Week 1

It was a very busy and successful opening weekend for ODAC women's volleyball with league programs going 24-17 (.585) against non-conference teams. Four conference squads are unbeaten with Lynchburg, Virginia Wesleyan and Washington and Lee all starting at 4-0 with Hollins posting a 2-0 mark. Guilford is 3-1 and Randolph-Macon and Bridgewater each won twice. Averett head coach Emma Nash and Shenandoah head coach Travis Abele both notched their first career coaching victories, while Roanoke also picked up a victory.

  • BREANA BROOKS | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN | MB
    Brooks, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., played stellar net defense and attacked at a high clip in her three matches played as part of Virginia Wesleyan's 4-0 weekend at its own tournament. Brooks posted 16 total blocks – including seven solo – for a 1.33 per set average while adding 23 kills at a .388 clip. She opened on Friday with 13 kills with no errors on 23 swings for a .565 attack percentage in a 3-1 win over Marymount University. She posted four blocks with one solo and picked up a pair of digs. Later that day in a 3-0 win over Plymouth State, Brooks again turned back four attacks (one solo) to go with three digs, and four kills at a .500 attack percentage. She did not play in VWU's first match on Saturday, a 3-1 win over Widener University, but Brooks returned for the second match and helped the Marlins to a 3-2 win over Westminster College (Mo.). She registered eight blocks including an eye-opening five solo efforts to go with a pair of digs and six kills.

  • GRACE MITCHENER | WASHINGTON AND LEE | OH
    Mitchener, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., led all ODAC players during the first week with 5.46 points and 4.75 kills per set to help nationally ninth-ranked Washington and Lee to four straight-set victories over Wilmington College, Asbury University, Hanover College, and Centre College at the Colonel Invitational hosted by Centre. Mitchener, an All-ODAC First Team pick in 2024, opened with 10 kills on a .364 attack percentage with five aces, eight digs, and a block against Wilmington. Later on Friday, she posted 17 kills with 14 digs and an ace against Asbury. On Saturday, Mitchener made just one error and registered 30 kills on 64 combined swings against Hanover and Centre. She nailed 14 winners with six digs and a block against HC, and added 16 kills with 13 digs and an ace versus the host Colonels. Mitchener accounted for no fewer than 14.5 points in any match.

    • Setter Dayton Moore handed out 78 assists with 42 digs in Averett's 1-3 weekend at its own Cougar Classic.
    • Outside Reagan Stoop hammered 50 digs at a .271 clip to go with 53 digs in Bridgewater's 2-2 start. Libero Anna Black posted 67 digs, good for a 4.47 per-set average.
    • Outside Natalie Moore and middle Madison Duvall to two of Guilford's stars in the Quakers' 3-1 weekend. Moore collected 42 kills and 13 aces offensively while chipping in 38 digs and 10 block assists on defense. Duvall exploded for 19 block assists (1.36/set) and registered 27 kills at a .303 clip with six aces.
    • Hollins middle Sophia Maurer, the ODAC leader in aces the past two seasons, registered 11 in HU's 2-0 start. She also hit for 12 kills at a .579 percentage with 14 digs and eight total blocks.
    • Kate Hardie was stellar in her Lynchburg debut after transferring from Mercer, posting 57 kills (3.56/set) at a .272 mark with five aces, 32 digs, and five total blocks. Libero Morgan Clarke picked up 57 digs (3.56/set) with just two receiving errors and 11 assists in the Hornets' 4-0 start.
    • Libero Teagan Hubble patrolled Roanoke's back line with 60 digs (4.29/set) to go with six aces, while middle Emma Catoe notched 36 kills while hitting .314 with four total blocks in the Maroons 1-3 weekend at the Cougar Classic hosted by Averett.
    • Outside Hannah Smith, returning to Virginia Wesleyan's lineup after a stellar All-ODAC First Team season in 2024, posted an ODAC-high 59 kills while hitting .271 with nine aces, 47 digs, and five total blocks in the Marlins' 4-0 start at its own tournament.
    • All-ODAC First Team libero Vivi Vasquez helped Washington and Lee start 4-0 by posting 71 digs at 5.92 per set the Generals quartet of 3-0 victories. She made one receiving error in 28 attempts (.964).
