ODAC Women's Volleyball Report: Week 2

The ODAC women's volleyball standings are a bit top-heavy with Washington and Lee (8-0), Virginia Wesleyan (7-0), and Lynchburg (7-1) a combined 22-1. All three feature in the latest AVCA survey with the Generals holding as the ninth-ranked team in the country, while the Marlins (61) and the Hornets (21) received votes towards the top-25. Guilford (4-2), Bridgewater (4-3), and Roanoke (4-4) have each won four matches. Overall the ODAC is 46-34 (.575) in early non-league action.

  • ANNA BLACK | BRIDGEWATER | LIBERO
    Black, a graduate student from Rock Hill, S.C., averaged an eye-opening 7.80 digs in Bridgewater's 1-1 week that featured a five-set victory at Christopher Newport University over the weekend. Black posted the top-two digs matches in the ODAC so far this season on the way to an All-Tournament Team appointment at the Captains Challenge hosted by CNU. Black registered an ODAC season-best 33 digs with four assists and an ace in the Eagles win over the host Captains. She made just one reception error in 21 chances for a .955 percentage. In a 3-0 loss to Trinity University (Texas), Black averaged more than eight digs per set with 26 pickups. She again made just one reception error in 25 attempts for a .962 percentage. She was 47-of-49 (.959) for the week. Her 26 digs are tied with Virginia Wesleyan's Hannah Smith for second-most in a match in the ODAC this season. For the season, Black leads the ODAC in digs (149) and digs per set (5.52).

    Mitchener, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., collects her second ODAC weekly honor in as many weeks after helping nationally ninth-ranked Washington and Lee remain unbeaten at 8-0 with three victories at the W&L Invitational over the weekend. Mitchener averaged 5.05 points and 4.30 kills per set and hit .314 with five aces, 34 digs, and four total blocks. Equally as impressive were her overall efficiency numbers as she made just six attacking errors in 117 swings, went 31-of-33 (.939) on serve receive, had no service errors, and was whistled for only one blocking error. In a 3-0 win over the University of Mary Washington on Sunday, Mitchener hammered 15 kills at a .324 clip with seven digs and a block-assist. In the first of two matches on Sunday, Mitchener recorded 12 kills and hit .333 with 11 digs, a block-assist, and an ace in a 3-0 win over St. Mary's (Md.). Washington and Lee's final match was against Southern Virginia University, which is receiving votes towards the latest AVCA top-25 poll. In the Generals 3-1 win, Mitchener smacked 16 kills while hitting .298 with 16 digs, four aces, two assists, and two total blocks. For the season, Mitchener leads the ODAC in kills per set (4.55) and is second in total kills (100) and hitting percentage (.346) on the third-most attacks (246) in the league. Her kills-per-set average ranks 11th in Division III.

    • Averett middle Tahani Villines posted 45 kills and 45 digs with outside Sydney Mounce posting 38 kills and 41 digs in the Cougars 1-3 week. The combined for 11 overall blocks.
    • Bridgewater outside Reagan Stoop registered 28 kills and 25 digs in a 1-1 week that featured a 3-2 victory over 21st-ranked Christopher Newport University.
    • EMU libero Felicity Jones notched 37 digs and six aces, while setter Kaitlyn Custis handed out 59 assists with 18 digs in a 1-2 week.
    • Guilford libero Vivian Cavataio picked up 33 digs with outside Natalie Moore posting 24 kills with 22 digs in the Quakers 1-1 week.
    • Lynchburg middle Ava Meinhardt posted 22 kills with six aces and 14 total blocks (5 solo), while outside Kate Hardie hammered 36 kills with 18 digs in the Hornets 3-1 week.
    • Roanoke libero Teagan Hubble registered 72 digs with nine aces and 20 assists with middle Emma Catoe collecting 47 kills at a .292 clip with eight total blocks in the Maroons 3-1 weekend.
    • Shenandoah outside Hannah Hylton notched 40 kills with 52 digs in the Hornets 2-1 week. She had 20 kills in a 3-1 win over Marymount (Va.).
    • In Virginia Wesleyan's 4-0 week, outside Hannah Smith recorded 45 kills while hitting .304 to go with five aces, 51 digs, and six total blocks. Her 26 digs in a 3-2 win over Meredith matched Bridgewater's Anna Black for the second-most in the ODAC this year. VWU outside Alexis Shaw posted 34 kills and six total blocks.
    • Washington and Lee libero Vivi Vasquez patrolled the back line for 36 digs with four aces in the Generals 3-0 week.
