ODAC Baseball Report: Week 5

Winning is clearly what ODAC baseball teams do as league programs have won 90 games overall against non-conference foes. Eight teams are better than .500 led by nationally 11th-ranked Shenandoah at 16-2. No. 14 Bridgewater is 15-2, while No. 5 Lynchburg is 12-3-1. No. 23 Roanoke is 12-4, while Hampden-Sydney (10-7) and Virginia Wesleyan (10-6) have both cracked double figures. The Tigers have won each of their first four ODAC games to top the conference table.

  • CARTER SCHUMA | RANDOLPH-MACON | SP
Schuma, a junior from Midlothian, Va., collects his second straight ODAC weekly honor after beating a nationally-ranked conference team for the second time in as many starts. Schuma was even more efficient than his 61-point outing against Shenandoah on the way to claiming last week's ODAC award. This week, Schuma needed just 51 pitches to clear 7.0 frames and earn a complete-game win in a 12-2 shortened triumph over No. 23 Roanoke. He gave up two runs on five hits. He walked just one batter and fanned a pair. He rolled up 10 ground ball outs and retired 12 of the last 14 batters of the game with the only two blips a walk and a hit-by-pitch to back-to-back Maroons in the sixth inning. For the season, Schuma is 3-1 in four starts covering 21.0 innings. He owns a 3.00 ERA and has struck out 13 batters with three walks. Only one (double) of the 20 hits he has allowed have gone for extra bases.

  • JP WILLIAMS | SHENANDOAH | CATCHER
Williams, a junior from Haymarket, Va., was ever-present on the basebaths last week, reaching safely in 12-of-14 plate appearances on the way to an .800/.857/1.400 slash line to help nationally 11th-ranked Shenandoah to a 2-1 showing against ODAC competition. Williams went 8-for-10 overall with three doubles, a homer, six RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases, three walks, and a HBP. In a 4-2 loss at Washington and Lee in a midweek clash, Williams went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and a run driven in. He also threw out a would-be base stealer from behind the dish. In a doubleheader road sweep (9-2, 12-1) over Virginia Wesleyan, Williams went a combined 5-for-7 with five RBI and six runs scored. He doubled and walked in game one and then hammered a three-run homer to cap the scoring in game two. He stole a base in each outing. For the season, Williams is hitting .509 (28-of-55) with a 1.529 OPS powered by seven doubles, three triples, and three homers. He has driven in 22 runs and scored 19 times.
