ODAC Baseball Report: Week 4

Combination play featured over the past seven days with 20 non-conference games and five ODAC doubleheaders on Saturday accounting for 30 games played. Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke, and Virginia Wesleyan earned sweeps in their opening conference series, while nationally fourth-ranked Lynchburg got one win over Washington and Lee before both squads settled for a 9-9 tie in game two due to darkness. Randolph-Macon and No. 22 Shenandoah split their outings. Overall, Shenandoah leads with a 14-1 mark, while No. 18 Bridgewater is 12-2. Roanoke (10-2) and Virginia Wesleyan (10-4) have each won 10 games. Ten of the conference's 11 teams have .500 better records with no squad winning fewer than five games.

  • CARTER SCHUMA | RANDOLPH-MACON | SP
Schuma, a junior from Midlothian, Va., put together a quiet and efficient pitching line in leading Randolph-Macon to a 4-1 victory over nationally 22nd-ranked Shenandoah. The Yellow Jackets' win marked the first loss for SU this season. Schuma worked the first six frames and threw just 61 pitches en route to the victory. He surrendered four hits and walked one while fanning three of the 21 batters he faced. He set down six straight Hornets at one point and was the beneficiary of three double plays as part of nine ground ball outs.

  • BENTON JONES | LYNCHBURG | 2ND BASE
Jones, a senior from Durham, N.C., did what he does best – get on base and drive in runs -- to help the nationally fourth-ranked Hornets to a 2-1-1 showing last week. Jones hit .529 (9-for-17) with a 1.854 OPS powered by a pair of two homer games on the way to nine RBI and nine runs scored. In a 15-4 win at Greensboro on Tuesday, he went 4-for-5 with two homers and a walk. He drove in six runs and scored four times while also stealing a base. Following an 8-3 loss at Maryville College (Tenn.), Jones helped the Hornets rebound by combining to go 5-for-8 with three walks in a 10-6 win and a 9-9 tie (darkness) with Washington and Lee. He went 1-for-2 and walked three times with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in game one. In game two, Jones homered twice as part of a three-RBI day with two runs scored. Jones was strong in the field as well, making just one error on 27 chances (19 assists, 8 putouts).
