LEXINGTON, Va. --- Top-seeded Washington and Lee University scored 10 goals in the first 30 minutes of action and turned a six-goal halftime lead into a 10-goal victory as the nationally 15th-ranked Generals out-paced No. 7 University of Lynchburg, 18-8, to claim the program's second straight and 14th overall ODAC men's lacrosse title on Sunday afternoon in Lexington.
Washington and Lee (15-5) receives the ODAC's automatic entry into the Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship bracket. Lynchburg (16-3) and any other awaiting ODAC team will learn if it received one of 13 at-large selections to the 40-team field following the conclusion of all Division III play on Sunday night. The field will be released at 9:00 p.m. ET via selection show on Sunday night on NCAA.com.
The Generals scored early and often on Sunday, registering the first four goals of the game on the way to a 7-1 advantage when the clock hit zero after the first quarter. Lynchburg found its feet a bit in the second quarter with three goals, but WLU matched them to head into the break up six at 10-4.
The Hornets got the first goal of the third frame, but players in blue & white tallied four consecutive goals to break open the game at 14-5 with 3:36 on the third quarter clock. Lynchburg scored the final two goals of the period to cut the lead to seven with 15 minutes of regulation play remaining.
Washington and Lee did not for any thoughts of a comeback as the Generals opened the final stanza with a four-goal run to take an 18-7 lead with 7:27 to go.
The face-off played a major role all afternoon with Washington and Lee winning 24-of-29 showdowns. Israel Mikkelson went 23-of-27 with 19 ground balls in an eye-opening effort.
WLU saw five players post four or more points led by James Meyer with a game-best six points on three goals and three assists. James Haley and Elliot Cohen both went for two goals and three helpers, while Luke Cadwell (1g, 3a) and Tucker Davis (3g, 1a) went opposite each other on the way to posting four points apiece.
Spencer Vandenberg and Liam Holman led Lynchburg with two goals each.
Defensively, WLU keeper JJ Kim made 10 saves while Eric Allen made 13 shots for Lynchburg. Generals' defenseman Jay O'Keefe and Lawsome Marshall caused two turnovers each. The Hornets' Luke Meadows led all players with three forced miscues. He also led Lynchburg with five ground balls.
