ODAC Men's Soccer Report: Week 5

ODAC men's soccer teams featured in their lightest week of the season with just 13 fixtures on the calendar. All 12 squads competed in one of six games on Saturday to kickoff their respective ODAC slate of games. Bridgewater, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg, Shenandoah, Virginia Wesleyan, and Washington and Lee each earned three points with victories. The Tigers, who were receiving votes to last week's United Soccer Coaches top-25 poll, have won the most games overall at seven, while BC, Lynchburg, and VWU are joined by Randolph-Macon and Roanoke with six victories.

  • WILLIAM CASEY | LYNCHBURG | CENTER BACK
Casey, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, N.C., helped Lynchburg remain unbeaten overall and improve to 6-0-2 with a pair of victories last week including the Hornets ODAC-opening contest. That latter affair came on the weekend at Randolph-Macon with Lynchburg's defense bending but not breaking on the way to a 2-1 road victory. Casey helped limit the Yellow Jackets to just two shots on goal. During the midweek and playing on a neutral site at the Horizons Edge Sports Campus in Harrisonburg, Casey contributed on both ends of the pitch in a 4-1 triumph over Franklin & Marshall College. The Hornets surrendered just seven total shots, but it was the Diplomats who got on the scoreboard first in the 30th minute. Casey helped erase the deficit. After teammate Chris Bovo leveled the score just before halftime, it was Casey that buried the game-winner in the 64th minute with a laser beam from a tight-angle on the right post following a corner kick setup. He made it 3-1 Hornets just short of three minutes later when he redirected a perfect cross from Matthew Viscuso with a control volley. For the season, Casey has helped Lynchburg own a 0.63 opponent goals against average, the third-stingiest in the conference. Casey has scored three goals this season.

  • TREY WIDRICK | BRIDGEWATER | FORWARD
Widrick, a junior from Cary, N.C., collects his first ODAC weekly award of the season after helping Bridgewater recover from a 3-0 midweek loss at the University of Mary Washington to post a 3-2 triumph at Randolph College on Saturday in both team's ODAC opener. Widrick provided all three goals to notch his first collegiate hat trick and multi-goal game. The 6-foot-3 forward opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an assist from Cole Dunbar. Just 57-seconds later, Widrick made it 2-0 Eagles, this time off a feed from Anthony Medrano. More than an hour ticked away between Randolph's first goal and Widrick's third tally in the 75th minute. Medrano again was credited with the assist on Widrick's eventual game-winning goal. For the season, Widrick is tied for third in the ODAC in assists (3), tied for fourth in points (11), and tied for eighth in goals scored (4).

    • Averett keeper Anibal Lopez made seven saves in a 1-0 loss to top-of-table Hampden-Sydney.
    • EMU midfielder Kane Kiernan registered a brace in a 3-0 victory over Mary Baldwin University.
    • Hampden-Sydney keeper Stig Larson made one save and midfielder Victor Ovalle-Mares scored the goal in a 1-0 victory at Averett.
    • Lynchburg midfielder Matthew Viscuso registered one assist each in wins over Franklin & Marshall College (4-1) and at Randolph-Macon (2-1).
    • Shenandoah keeper Jake Ziervogel made five stops in a 3-0 win at Marymount University and one save in a 2-0 triumph at Roanoke for the Hornets first win over the Maroons since 1989.
    • Virginia Wesleyan forward Zach Bittler was involved in all three goals in a 3-0 win at Guilford, scoring twice and dishing out an assist on the third.
    • Washington and Lee keeper Will Joseph made six saves in a pair of 2-0 clean sheets over .Roanoke and EMU, helping him reset and extend the WLU career shutouts record (26). He is now tied for fifth all-time in ODAC history. Midfielder Buster Couhig scored the Generals first goal against RC.
