ODAC Golf Report: Spring - Week 4

ODAC golfers competed in just three tournaments over the past week, but two of those were very well attended full events at Jekyll Island.

MEN'S GOLF - Two Tournaments

  • Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational (Results): A whopping 30 teams competed on the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club in one of two men's tournaments in the area. That group of squads included 24 outfits ranked 47th or better by Clippd upon the start of the event with nine of the top-10 teams in Division III in the field. Then fourth-ranked Washington and Lee led the ODAC's crew with a second place finish. The team table also included No. 12 Lynchburg (T-12th), No. 47 Hampden-Sydney (17th), No. 46 Shenandoah (T-20th), No. 34 Guilford (24th), Randolph-Macon (T-26th), and Roanoke (28th). Nationally top-ranked Jonathan McEwen from WLU was the top ODAC finisher in second place at -14 under par. Teammate Charlie Krasnewich (-8) earned a top-10 by placing 10th.
  • Indian Mound Men's Individual Invitational (Results): Additional players took to an individual tournament on the Indian Mound Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club. Hampden-Sydney's Matthew Teegardin was the only ODAC player in the field of 25 golfers, tying for sixth at 8-over par.


WOMEN'S GOLF - One Tournament

  • Jekyll Island Collegiate at Great Dunes (Results): Twenty-four women's squads were in action at Jekyll Island Golf Club on the Great Dunes Course. All but two of the teams in the field owned a ranking of 44th or better on the Clippd charts at the time play began. That group included eight of the top-10 outfits in Division III. Then 11th-ranked Washington and Lee led the ODAC contingent by placing sixth overall. The Generals were joined by No. 9 Randolph-Macon (9th) and No. 36 Lynchburg (17th). WLU's Toral Bhatt was the top ODAC finisher, tying for 10th at 12-over par.
  • TORAL BHATT | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
    Bhatt, a first-year from Milwaukee, Wis., put together her best collegiate outing with her first top-10 finish in a marquee event at the Jekyll Island Collegiate at Great Dunes hosted by Oglethorpe University at Jekyll Island Golf Club. Bhatt tied for 10th in a strong field of 120 players at 12-over par 228 following 54 holes of competition on the par-72 layout set to 5,613 yards on the Great Dunes Course. Bhatt opened with two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 451-yard 15th hole to power her way to a 4-over 76. She improved by one shot over her next 18 holes, registering four birdies on the way to a 3-over 75. Bhatt closed the event with three more birdies as part of a 5-over 77 in her final round. She tied for second in par-4 scoring (+3, 4.10) and tied for eighth with nine birdies. Bhatt's effort improved her Clippd ranking by 24 spots to No. 62 in Division III. She carries a 74.7 adjusted scoring average covering 13 rounds of competition.

    Washington and Lee registered its second straight sixth-place finish. finishing at 60-over 924 (306-308-310). The Generals moved up three spots to No. 8 in Division III on the Clippd table. They own a 296.6 adjusted scoring average from 13 rounds played.

  • JONATHAN McEWEN | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
    McEwen, a junior from Portsmouth, Va., posted a his fifth top-five finish in six starts this season by placing second overall out of a strong field of 150 players at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe University at Jekyll Island Golf Club. McEwen, who has been ranked No. 1 in Division III by Clippd in each instance of the outlet's published rankings, finished two strokes behind Turner Chiles from Sewanee at 14-under par 202 following 54 holes of competition on the par-72 layout set to 6,730 yards on the Pine Lakes Course. McEwen made just two bogeys over the course of the tournament. He carded a clean 3-under 69 powered by three birdies and 15 pars to open the event. He blistered the course in round two despite posting one of those two bogeys. He sank four birdies on each nine to register a 7-under 65. McEwen added five more birdies over his final 18 holes, offsetting his second bogey on the way to a 4-under 68. He tied for second in par-4 scoring (-6, 3.80) and fewest bogeys, while his 16 birdies tied for fourth as the second-highest output amongst all players. McEwen, who boasts a 68.2 adjusted scoring average, owns a 23.57-point lead atop the Division III Clippd rankings.

    Washington and Lee finished as the runner-up to top-ranked Huntingdon College by 10 strokes with a season-best score-to-par at 28-under. The Generals had three players in the top-20 power their 54-hole 836 (281-275-280). WLU jumped two spots in the Clippd rankings to No. 2 in Division III. The Generals have finished sixth or better in five of their six tournaments this year with two runner-up showings. They own a 283.2 adjusted scoring average.
