ODAC Golf Report: Spring - Week 1

ODAC golf is back! The links were full of league golfers over the past couple of days with very strong results including an individual title for Washington and Lee's Jonathan McEwen as the gap between him and the next closest player atop the Clippd Division III rankings widens.

MEN'S GOLF - Two Tournaments

  • Savannah Invitational (Results): Berry College as the host of the Savannah Invitational at the Club at Savannah Harbor. The 54-hole event featured eight of the top 12 programs in Division III (by Clippd) with four ODAC squads among the 20-team field – Washington and Lee (T-2nd), Guilford (T-9th), Lynchburg (14th), and Hampden-Sydney (20th). WLU's Jonathan McEwen won this event by three strokes at 13-under par.
  • Port City Classic (Results): There were two tournaments in the area with Berry College also hosting the Port City Classic at the Savannah Country Club. Twenty teams also dotted this field, albeit several were “B” team outfits. Six ODAC schools were in the field for the 54-hole affair including Randolph-Macon (4th), Shenandoah (5th), Averett (6th), Hampden-Sydney (B team - 7th), Roanoke (13th), and Washington and Lee (B team - 15th). SU's Dan Ailor won the individual medal by one stroke over RMC's Charlie Wilkerson at 1-over par.
  • Pfeiffer Spring Invitational (Results): Pfeiffer University hosted its annual spring event at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Sunset Beach, N.C. Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan each entered “A” and “B” squads in the 10-team field with VWU's two outfits and BC's A-unit all tying for second with the Eagles' B-team placing seventh. The Marlins' Brady King was the top ODAC individual in second place, one stroke back of Kellen Adickes from Belmont Abbey.

WOMEN'S GOLF - One Tournaments

  • Pfeiffer Spring Invitational (Results): The ODAC women's spring season kicked off with just one tournament, the Pfeiffer Spring Invitational hosted by Pfeiffer University at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Sunset Beach, N.C. Virginia Wesleyan (2nd), Averett (5th), and Bridgewater (9th) accounted for the ODAC's representation in the 11-team field. VWU's Juliette Coffey was the top ODAC finisher as the runner-up, two shots back of Ann Burel from Eastern Florida State College.
  • JULIETTE COFFEY | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY
Coffey, a junior from Woodbridge, England, opens the spring season just like she closed the fall campaign with an ODAC weekly honor. The former ODAC individual champion (2024) was the highlight of a record-breaking tournament for Virginia Wesleyan women's golf with four new school-records established at the Pfeiffer Spring Invitational hosted by Pfeiffer University at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Sunset Beach, N.C. Coffey finished as the runner-up, carding a 3-over par 147 following 36 holes of competition on the par-72 track set to 5,639 yards. That 147 total is the 36-hole record for Marlins women's golf, while Coffey's 1-over 73 in round one is a new 18-hole individual benchmark at VWU. She carded three birdies in that round and three more over the final 18 holes on the way to a 2-over 74. Coffey is currently ranked 74th in Division III with an adjusted scoring average of 75.4 over 10 rounds of play. Her effort this week helped her jump 69 places in the Clippd rankings.

Virginia Wesleyan finished second over 11 teams at 55-over 631. That total is a new 36-hole team record, while the Marlins second round 309 is a new 18-hole team standard. They shot 322 in round one. VWU is now ranked 52nd in Division III, improving by 18 positions in the Clippd rankings from this tournament.

  • JONATHAN McEWEN | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
McEwen, a junior from Portsmouth, Va., highlighted his entry on the 2026 Ben Hogan Award “Watch List” by winning the first high-profile event to kickoff the spring season. McEwen won for the second time this season, topping a 100-player field at the Savannah Invitational hosted by Berry College at the Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga. McEwen won by three strokes, carding a 13-under par 203 following 54 holes of competition on the par-72 layout set to 6,958 yards. What is most impressive is how well McEwen played on the front foot. He opened with a clean 8-under 64 that featured six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 530-yard 11th hole. He followed that with a 5-under 67 featuring seven more birdies to put him at 13-under after 36 holes. While his scorecard was a bit too “colorful” to say he cruised in round three, he offset four bogeys with four birdies to post an even-par 72 and win comfortably over a trio of players from Huntingdon College. McEwen is the top-ranked player in Division III – a distinction he has owned all season – with an adjusted scoring average of 67.8 covering 12 rounds of play.

Washington and Lee tied for second overall with eighth-ranked Oglethorpe University at 6-under par 858 (282-281-295). Top-ranked Huntingdon won by an impressive 24 strokes at 30-under 834. The Generals entered the tournament ranked ninth in the country, but WLU left Savannah having jumped four spots to No. 5, the program's highest showing this season in the Clippd rankings.
